In a study aggregated using geotagged data via a trends software and Twitter API, BetOnline found that there are portions of the United States that tweet more about the LIV Golf Series than the PGA Tour.
Over the last 45 days, BetOnline.ag analyzed more than 200,000 tweets containing keyword hashtags such as #LIVGolf, #LIVGolfSeries, #PGATour, #PGAChampionship, etc to arrive at their findings.
This comes as Tiger Woods on Tuesday condemned those who have taken part in the Saudi-backed tournament.
"Who knows what's going to happen in the near future with world-ranking points, the criteria for entering major championships," Woods said. "The governing body is going to have to figure that out.
"Some of these players may not ever get a chance to play in major championships. That is a possibility. We don't know that for sure yet. It's up to all the major championship bodies to make that determination. But that is a possibility, that some players will never, ever get a chance to play in a major championship, never get a chance to experience this right here, walk down the fairways at Augusta National. That, to me, I just don't understand it."
Rory McIlroy echoed that sentiment. "There’s No Room in the Golf World for LIV," he said.
Thought the BetOnline findings showed that the PGA Tour still dominates social media discussion in the Americathere does appear to be a regional component. Most LIV interest was coming from the Northeast and Northwest.
